How do I get video from my USB capture cable or video grabber?
Written by admin, February 26th, 2008

USB capture cables typically offer two input ports for video: “Composite” and “SVideo”. The Composite port is usually yellow in color and looks like a standard stereo connector as found on the back of VCRs. The SVideo port is usually a round, black connector, with a couple of very small sockets inside it. You will most likely need to select the “Composite” video input port before it will display your camcorders video signal. To do this, follow these steps in MotionView:

  1. Enter the “Capture” screen in MotionView

  2. Press the “Show Camera Controls” button.

  3. Press the small “I/O” button on the Camera Controls Panel.

This will display a dialog box (presented by your USB video cable device driver) where you should find a selection for ”Composite”or “Svideo” as the input port to be used by the cable. Once you select the correct input port you should see the actual video coming into the cable.

A very similar method is available in MotionClip.

I recently bought the motion analysis software and because my camcorder is a Hard drive one there was no firewire out so I had to buy a USB video grabber. When i tried to get playback on my laptop the screen was either black or had stripey black and white lines. In the instruction manual supplied the only reference about using a video grabber was that you needed one if your camera did not have firewire but apart from that nothing else. I thought then it was my videograbber that was defective and was ready to throw the thing in the bin until I checked on the allsport website and found this post and in two seconds I spotted the problem which was that I had not clicked the I/O button which brought up a sub menu where I then was able to change the selection to Composite and hey presto I have a live feed into my laptop with good quality video. This small but vital piece of information should have been supplied with the instruction manual and saved me two weeks of frustration.

Thanks for pointing this out Bruce. We’ll add a note about the I/O button for our future customers!
