AVI video is frozen or black.
Written by admin, September 22nd, 2008

Some of our customers have reported being unable to play .AVI files captured within our software. The symptom is that they see the first frame of video only, but nothing happens when they play the video, or attempt to move the video into a different position. In some cases the video image turns black… in other cases nothing happens at all, the video stays at the first frame.

In every case where this has happened, the problem has proven to be some third-party video codec that is running in place of the standard Microsoft DV codec on their system. This problem has been resolved in every case by identifying and removing the third-party video codec or software package.

Video packages that are known to cause this problem include:

  • Windows Essential Media Codec pack 1.0
  • Videowave 10
  • K-Lite Video Codec Pack

There are many freeware “video codec packs” available by download that may corrupt your computers ability to play AVI files in our software (the list above is not all inclusive). If you are experiencing this problem you will most likely need to uninstall third party video codec packs or software video players from your system. This problem can be difficult to resolve due to the sheer quantity of such products available for download, so you may need to uninstall more than one product before finding the culprit.

What is the relationship between Shutter Speed and Frame Rate or Frames Per Second?
Written by admin, April 18th, 2008

Most consumer cameras in the U.S. take 30 pictures every second. This is a constant, and is known as the Frame Rate or Frames Per Second. The amount of time the shutter is open during each of these pictures is determined by your shutter speed. So if you set your shutter speed to 1/100th of a second, then during each of those 30 images the camera will capture 1/100th of a second worth of action. If you set the shutter to 1/10000 then each image will capture only 1/10000 of a second. The camera will not take ‘the next’ picture until 1/30th of a second has elapsed. Therefore, a faster shutter speed will reduce the amount of blurring you see in high speed actions, but it will not increase the total number of images captured during any period of time. The following image illustrates this for a camera filming 30 frames per second, with the shutter speed set to 1/100th of a second.

What are the typical sizes for AVI or WMV video files?
Written by admin, April 17th, 2008

AVI video generally consumes about to 4 to 5MB per second (at 720×480 resolution). You will want to use AVI in MotionView because this produces the highest quality and because AVI files produce the smoothest playback in forward and reverse slow motion.

Windows Media (WMV) videos typically consume about 10 MB per MINUTE at 640×480. This is the format you will want to use in MotionClip, since you will be working with much longer video segments (matches or games), and probably not doing much slow motion analysis.

How do I convert video to 60 frames per second (FPS)?
Written by admin, April 17th, 2008

Conversion to 60FPS takes place on the “Export Video Options” panel. To convert a video file from 30FPS to 60FPS take the following steps:

. Open the 30FPS video in MotionView, and trim any excess.
. Click the Export Video icon.
. On the Export Video Options panel select “Convert raw video into 60FPS”.
. Click OK and choose a filename for your new video.

This will produce a new video file in 60FPS. Your 30 FPS video will not be affected. Note that 60FPS conversion only works on video files that are “interlaced”, such as AVI files that were captured over firewire or over our USB Video Capture cable. You cannot convert WMV, MOV, MPEG, or other formats into 60FPS.

How do I convert .MOV files (Quicktime) into AVI files using Quicktime Pro?
Written by admin, February 21st, 2008

  1. Open your .mov file in Quicktime PRO and then click File/Export.

  2. Select the “Movie to AVI” format, and choose a filename for your new .avi file.

  3. Under Options/Video Settings, select the Compression type “DV/DVCPRO – NTSC”. You can also adjust the quality of the new video here. These settings will all be remembered, so you don’t have to keep setting them for each video you convert after this.

  4. Click “OK” back through all the screens until you can “Save” the video. That’s it! Once the export is complete your .AVI file will have a native resolution of 720×480.

Can I use DVD movies?
Written by admin, December 31st, 2007

Our software is designed to work with computer video files such as .AVI, .WMV, etc. DVDs do not store files in these computer formats. However you can still work with your DVD videos by either converting them into standard computer video files or by capturing them through our USB Video Grabber. Of all the video conversion products we have seen, the AVS Video Tools software package appears to be the most powerful and affordable.

What file formats does your software support?
Written by admin, December 31st, 2007

Our software is designed to work with standard AVI video files. This is the most universally available file format, and offers the smoothest control over seeking, drawing, etc. However, we can also process many other file formats, including .WMV, .MOV, and .MPG. There may be others as well. If you have video files in a format that cannot be displayed, then you simply need to convert these into .AVI. We recommend the AVS Video Tools software package, as this is the most powerful and affordable product we have found on the net.
