Creating lessons with the Digital VCR software
Written by admin, December 31st, 2007

To create a video lesson you first open a video file (or capture some new video from your camera).

Next, while on the ‘Analyze’ screen, you use the menu “Digital VCR/Create a Video Lesson”. This will display a small preview window in the lower left corner of MotionView, showing the content that will be placed into your new lesson. Initially the preview window will include a dark blue frame, indicating that the lesson recorder is Paused.

When you are ready to add content to the new video lesson, press the REC button on the preview image. This starts the recording process, and the software begins capturing your screen activity (video stepping or playing, new drawings, etc), as well as your speech (through any standard PC microphone). When adding new content, the frame around the preview window will turn RED.

Here’s a screenshot:

If you want to pause the lesson recorder (perhaps to change the video you are working with, or to set up some new drawings), you simply press the PAU button (which stands for pause).

You can continue this process (REC/PAU) as long as you like. Just keep in mind that new content is only added to the video lesson you are creating when the preview window has a RED frame around it.

Once you are done, press the END button. You will then be given a chance to review the video lesson you created, and to either save it or discard it. If you save it, it will automatically be compressed into a WMV video file and placed inside your computer’s CDROM burning folder to await burning to a CD.

Can I use DVD movies?
Written by admin, December 31st, 2007

Our software is designed to work with computer video files such as .AVI, .WMV, etc. DVDs do not store files in these computer formats. However you can still work with your DVD videos by either converting them into standard computer video files or by capturing them through our USB Video Grabber. Of all the video conversion products we have seen, the AVS Video Tools software package appears to be the most powerful and affordable.

What file formats does your software support?
Written by admin, December 31st, 2007

Our software is designed to work with standard AVI video files. This is the most universally available file format, and offers the smoothest control over seeking, drawing, etc. However, we can also process many other file formats, including .WMV, .MOV, and .MPG. There may be others as well. If you have video files in a format that cannot be displayed, then you simply need to convert these into .AVI. We recommend the AVS Video Tools software package, as this is the most powerful and affordable product we have found on the net.

How do I upgrade to a more advanced edition?
Written by admin, December 31st, 2007

You can upgrade your video analysis software to a more advanced edition at any time simply by purchasing an upgrade license in our store. You will not need to download anything, or even wait for a new CD. You simply reactivate using the license code we deliver by email. The cost to upgrade is usually no higher than the “difference” between the edition you have and the edition you are upgrading to.

Which cameras work best?
Written by admin, December 31st, 2007

We frequently get asked questions about how to choose the best camera for use with our video analysis software. There are so many options out there that it can be quite confusing. Well the answers are easier than you might imagine!

THE BEST CHOICE: MINI-DV TAPE BASED CAMCORDERS
It might surprise you to learn that inexpensive, mini-DV tape based camcorders are the best choice, but it’s true! These cameras almost always include the vital FIREWIRE, or 1394 port, needed to deliver real-time video directly to your computer in 720×480 or larger format. Since the cameras have the firewire port you can also control the tape mechanism from our software screens, without touching the camera! So save your money and buy a MINI-DV camcorder with firewire!

Choose a camcorder with a MANUALLY ADJUSTABLE shutter speed for the best results. This will allow you to run the shutter as fast as possible (based on the available light), thereby minimizing the blurring you get in the final video.

Using DVD or Hard Drive Camcorders
These cameras are the latest rage, and usually quite expensive. Unfortunately they rarely include a firewire port, and the USB connection they offer usually does not support the standard windows camera drivers for real time video. These cameras also compress their video files deeply, usually into an MPEG format, which does not perform well for video analysis work.

You can still make use of these cameras by means of our USB Video Grabber cables. We have a section on our website dedicated to these devices. Basically you will connect the analog video output signal from the camera to the USB video grabber, and then plug the other end into your computer’s USB port. The video grabber will convert the video signal into a real-time digital video signal, providing a live video feed right into our software. Another advantage of the USB video grabber is that you can capture video from ANY analog source, such as a VCR, DVD player, or TV tuner.
